Windhoek, Namibia – 24 April 2025 – Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) wishes to inform all guests and self-drive visitors that the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) has introduced a temporary traffic deviation inside Etosha National Park to accommodate major road-construction works. From 23 April 2025 until November 2025, all vehicles travelling eastward from Okaukuejo toward Halali will be rerouted via Gemsbokvlakte.
Key details
- Deviated route: Follow sign-posted detours from Okaukuejo to Gemsbokvlakte before re-joining the main arterial road to Halali.
- Gate closure: The direct Okaukuejo–Halali section is closed for the duration of the project.
- Duration: 23 April – November 2025 (subject to construction progress).
- Speed limits & signs: Please observe all temporary signage and reduced speed limits.
- Construction traffic: Expect heavy machinery on-site; maintain a safe following distance.
- Park rules still apply: Remain inside your vehicle, keep to marked roads, and respect wildlife at all times.
Notice: Traffic Deviation via Gemsbokvlakte (Okaukuejo Route)
How this affects your stay
- Game-viewing access remains excellent along the Gemsbokvlakte detour, with frequent sightings of elephant, lion, and plains game.
- Sunrise and sunset drives from Okaukuejo will depart as scheduled, but allow extra travel time if you plan to visit Halali or farther east.
- Guided excursions booked through NWR will automatically adjust routing; no guest action is required.
- Fuel & supplies: Okaukuejo’s filling station and shop operate as normal; Halali services are accessible via the detour.
